Animal Farm by Orwell “Animal Tales” Project
English I Honors DUE DATE: Monday, September 30th
2
Introduction Throughout the history of humanity, people have been fascinated by talking animals. In nearly all such stories, the animals sound suspiciously like humans and behave like humans—from the big bad wolf to Garfield. Some contain morals to tell people how to behave—or how not to behave. Others are purely entertaining.
3
Directions Here is your chance to become familiar with some of the various types of animal tales. Your group will be assigned to one of the following topics:
4
Topics An Anansi tale from Africa A Brer Rabbit story An Aesop fable
A Mexican folk tale using animals that talk An American Indian myth using animals that talk A very recent children’s book using talking animals (must bring from home)
5
Directions (Part 1: Introduction)
Go to the library to research your type of animal tale as a group Write a brief introduction to your type of tale (What is an Anansi tale? Where and how did it develop?)—1 per group* (this will be submitted to turnitin.com) Make PowerPoint slides that give “bullet points” or highlights from this introduction as a way of introducing your type of tale to the class
6
Directions (Part 2: The Performance)
Pick one specific tale from your topic to present to the class All members of the group should read it or hear it read aloud Decide on a way to present it to the class other than reading it aloud. Be creative! Involve everyone in the group.
7
Directions (Part 3: End Discussion)
After your performance, the group will lead the class in a brief discussion of the tale you performed—its moral, its purpose, its effect. Create slides to add to your PowerPoint that will guide you in leading this discussion
8
To sum up… 1) Create introduction slides in your PowerPoint (How your tale came about, history of your type of tale, etc.) 2) Present story (DO NOT just read…act it out, write a song and perform it, mime it, puppet show, etc.—BE CREATIVE!) 3) Create slides in your PowerPoint to show after you present the story. These slides should identify the moral, purpose, and/or effect of your story, etc. and give any additional info, background, etc.
