Grammar! Colons and semicolons

What are they? Semicolon (;): used to link together two connected thoughts. The rain poured all day on Saturday; Jack was disappointed. Colon (:): used to separate a list from a sentence OR to emphasize a point to come. Danny had three great loves: baseball, anime, and El Faro tacos. When my dad heard the Cubs would make the World Series again, he only had one thought: Eamus Catuli!

Using semicolons Source:

Why use Semicolons? To link two connected ideas

Bell work: Add semicolons/colons as needed
Harry loved playing Quidditch; it was his favorite thing to do. Gets a semicolon because the two independent clauses are related ideas, and it doesn’t use a conjunction. Ron had many siblings: Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George, and Ginny. Gets a colon because it is listing Ron’s siblings. Hermione loved one thing more than anything else: books. Gets a colon because it is emphasizing something at the end of a sentence. Professor Snape hated most students; he only liked the Slytherins.

Bell work: Insert semicolons and colons
