1 Welcome to Second Grade!
Mrs. Marsden & Miss Albis

2 Who is Miss Albis? I have a 17 month old son  1st Year of Teaching
Graduated in May from VCU with a Master of Teaching Degree Student taught in Henrico and Hanover County Have lived in Henrico my entire life!

3 Building Independent Learners!
Reading Flexible Small Group Instruction (Based on F&P Assessments) Focus on Phonics Skills, Grammar, and Writing Fluency and comprehension skills Weekly Reading and Skills Assessments Important to read or be read to EVERY night! Math Hands-on math activities Independent, small group and partner activities Number sense/subitizing Differentiated Instruction Math Notebook-study guides, test prep

4 Social Studies/Science
Alternate units throughout the year Study Guides and a child created Standards of Learning spiral notebook will be used for each unit of study. These materials will provide opportunities for review in preparation of quizzes and tests. We will also be engaging students in Project Based Learning (PBL) activities throughout the year.

5 Writing Proper letter formation (top to bottom)
Proper spacing between words Correct use of upper and lowercase letters in sentences Spell commonly used sight words and words learned correctly Correct use of punctuation Writing complete sentences Using descriptive words Proper sequencing of events in story Writing 5 or more sentences on one topic

6 Technology Students will use a stereo, laptops, and promethean board
Utilize our programs at home that were purchased by the PTA

7 The PTA needs YOUR Support!
Consider joining the Cub Club! It would be wonderful to have 100% participation from our classroom! (We currently have 32%) Scholastic News, BrainPop, Raz Kids $62,000 raised/spent on our children (2016) $200 per teacher

8 Folders, Agenda, and Homework
The blue DAILY folder will come home every night. This folder should be checked by parents every night and papers should be removed each night. Please send in notes and lunch money in this folder, as it is checked at school daily as well. Please review classwork papers (sent home throughout the week) to see what we have been learning/practicing during the week. Please review graded papers with your child. (Typically sent home on Mondays) Agenda Book: Students will write down daily assignments, homework, and reminders in this book. Please check it and help your student be accountable for assignments.

9 Behavior Expectations
Whole Brain Teaching Creating independent learners who learn from each other through questioning and discovery Classroom Economy- tickets, classroom jobs, real world application Rewards- students are able to redeem their tickets, whenever they’d like for specific items/tasks

10 Responsibility and Independence
Help your student by holding them responsible for their own homework and behavior. Let them pack their own backpacks the night before school to be sure they have everything that is needed.

11 Lunch/Snack If you are going to have lunch with your student, please check into the office and wait in the cafeteria. No outside treats brought for the class, please. Our lunch time is 11:00-11:30 When sending in lunch money, please put your student’s full name, teacher, and amount on the envelope or baggie. We will have a working snack around 9:30 each morning. Please send in healthy snacks and water only.

12 Important Info Please send in a note if your child:
*is absent *is leaving early *has an appointment *has a transportation change I can not accept an because the note must be signed. *When picking up your child from school early you must sign them out from the office. Please include the date and time of the change. These notes should be sent to school in your student’s daily folder. Extended absences will need approval from Mr. Eggleston. Please keep in mind that long periods of missed school can greatly impact your student’s learning and success.

13 Classroom Volunteers If you would like to volunteer please fill out the volunteer interest form or let me know what you would like to do. All parents coming into school or attending a field trip must complete a volunteer form. A new volunteer form must be completed each year. All visitors to the school must sign in at the office before coming into the classroom. Mystery Reader sign up genius will be ed soon.

14 Grading 2nd grade based on a 10-point grading scale
A letter grade on a paper means it was recorded in the grade book. A stamp, check mark, sticker, or star means that it was checked, but not graded. The grading scale is as follows: A % Excellent B 80-89% Very Good C 70-79% Satisfactory D 65-69% Marginal Progress F Below 65% Failing Note: Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies tests are only read to students the first 9 weeks. Quizzes are not announced. Tests WILL BE announced.

15 Communication The best way to reach me is through . I will return your within 24 hours. Please be patient during the day as I am teaching precious minds  You can also write a note and place it in their daily BLUE folder *Visit the blog weekly for important information about the week.

16 Parent/Teacher Conferences
To be announced in November! 15 minute conferences A sign-up genius will be ed out shortly Please plan to arrive 5 minutes ahead of scheduled time in order to keep us on schedule
