Date: Feb 4, 2015 Page: Table of Contents p W.O.D: Last 5 pages Warm-ups:Front Cover W.O.D: Allele = the different forms of a gene. Question: In peas, the allele for flower color could either indicate pink or _________.
3
You have one copy of each gene from each of your parents.
Some are dominant: TT, Tt & Some are recessive: tt
4
Vocab words for Thursday
Homozygous = Two copies of the same allele of a trait (AA, aa) Heterozygous = One dominant and one recessive allele for a trait (Aa) Phenotype = physical appearance of an organism (observable traits) Genotype = Genetic make-up of traits, or an entire organism Dominant = Allele that is expressed as the phenotype in heterozygous pairs (Aa) Recessive = Allele that is not expressed in heterozygous pairs (Aa)
5
The probability of dominant and recessive traits can be show in a Punnett Square:
7
Step one: Know the parents
Is the parent heterozygous (they carry a DOMINANT and a recessive trait): Tt Or homozygous dominant (they carry two DOMINANT traits): TT Or homozygous recessive (they carry two recessive traits): tt
