1 Characterization Terms and Definitions

2 Terms and Definitions Major Characters: Characters who appear throughout the bulk of a novel or play and/or wield influence or heavily affect the plot Minor Characters: Characters who appear maybe only briefly or do not heavily affect the plot, although they play a valuable part in their own right

3 Dynamic / Round Characters: Characters who evolve or change in some way over the course of the story – usually from personal growth Static / Flat Characters: Characters who do not change/ evolve, but remain the same throughout the story

4 Protagonist: - the main character in a story
Antagonist: - any thing or person that opposes the main character

5 Direct Characterization: - language that states something directly about a character (could be narration or something another character says) “She was blindingly beautiful, like the sun.” Indirect Characterization: something a character does or feels that reveals something about him/ her: “I don’t think. I just bend my knees and jump.”
