Cold Winters, gentle summers Large rivers Abundant fish Mountains Food: Antelope, deer, salmon, onions and carrots Homes: Built near rivers, Partially underground, made from logs, reeds and mud Clothing: Animal hides decorated with shells and seeds

Canyons, mountains, deserts mesas Dry, hot climate 2 major rivers Food: Hunted small animals, planted corn, beans and squash Homes: Bricks of adobe (sun baked clay) to protect from the sun Clothing: cotton and dyed fabric

Treeless grasslands Dense Grasses More water and softer soil in eastern part Food: Buffalo meat, Some planting Homes: tipi’s made from buffalo skin Clothing: Buffalo hides with fat

Snowy winters Rainy summers Thick Forests Many lakes Food: Men hunted deer bear, beavers, and birds and speared fish. Gathered nuts and berries Homes: Log houses Clothing: Deerskin skirts, capes, moccasins

Southeast Features of the Environment:
Warm humid summers, mild winters Coastal plains, river valleys Mountains, swamps Food: Grew corn, beans, squash, pumpkins, and sunflowers, Hunted squirrels, rabbits, turkeys, deer. Homes: strips of young trees woven and filled in with clay Clothing: deerskin skirts decorated with stones, shells, bones
