3 How college students are a vulnerable population for Getting STD’s
Many believe that by using birth control you are protected Most college aged men say they use condoms but with further research realize that they really don’t or are not using them properly Many STD’s in the college population go undetected for months By using drugs and alcohol it depresses their thinking making them choose bad decisions and engage in unprotected sex. Just starting to drink alcohol and learning their limits

4 Statistics 1 in 4 college students have an STD
Only 54% of students use a condom during vaginal intercourse 29% during anal intercourse 4% during oral sex 19 million new STI’s occur each year half being year olds 80% of people who have a STD have no noticeable symptoms HPV is the number 1 STD on college campus’ and is undetectable for 2 years

5 Cultural descriptors College campuses are normally known for their parties with lots of drugs and alcohol Peer pressure While under the influence there is a lack of judgment leading them to not make wise decisions Casual sex is no longer looked down upon (it’s a norm now)

6 Bias toward College students
Economically it is a rough time for students so they may not be able to afford testing. Not as much education occurs in college on STD prevention Not being able to afford condoms Embarrassment of buying condoms and discussing them with partner

7 Health risk factors Unprotected sex Multiple partners
Being under 25 years old (young people are more likely to be infected then older people) Younger women can experience tearing more then older women and their bodies are more susceptible to STD Alcohol use, illicit drugs Trading sex for money Serial monogamy Using birth control pills as birth control

8 Environmental/community factors
Parties/bar College itself promotes networking Sex without love is considered ok Poverty Discriminations, stigma, homophobia Higher rates of undiagnosed or untreated STD’s Language barriers

9 Health promotion theory
Health Belief Model- suggest that a persons susceptibility to a health threat and its seriousness influence the decision to engage in a preventative health behavior What you don’t know CAN hurt you

10 Healthy people 2020 Goal: to “promote healthy sexual behaviors, strengthen community capacity, and increase access to quality services to prevent STD’s and their complications” (Healthy People 2020).
