Before you paint/ decorate your mask, you have to plan a design that reflects a chosen character trait (happy, sad, angry, confused, funny, surprised, loving, sleepy, mysterious, scary...etc.) Take a look at the next few slides to get an idea of how to convey a character trait in your design....

4 How do you show Character Traits in art?
Say you pick the character trait FUNNY. Here are three ways you could represent this... 1) Facial Expression Use facial expression on your mask to show the mask laughing or being funny. Example: Creating a mask of the laughing emoji. 2) Colours/ Symbols Use elements that represent laughter or things that you find funny. Example: You cover the face in LOL’s or write jokes on it. 3) Representation Create a mask of a pre-existing character that fits your character trait. Example: You pick the character trait FUNNY and you create a Deadpool mask because he is a funny character.

14 Step #1: Mask Design Choose your character trait
Either from the list on the back of the sheet or you can choose your own. Design your mask on the worksheet Keep in mind you will have to explain how your mask represents the character trait you chose on your Mask Response Worksheet (to be completed in Language Arts) Colour in your mask design on the sheet using pencil leads or markers.

15 Step #2: Painting Tips and Tricks
When painting..... Mix a little bit of white with RED and YELLOW as these are really see-thru. To make Caucasian skin colour: Mix a little dab of ORANGE with one well of WHITE. Use different size brushes for different things: For writing or small details, use the tiny green brushes. Flat brushes are for filling in areas Round brushes are for details and curves Bigger brush = bigger area to paint Use thin coats of paint! Use the hair dryer to dry layers slightly if you need.

16 Step #3 (Optional): Adding final touches
You have access to craft items: Glitter glue, pom poms, pipe cleaners, fabric, cardboard...etc. Use them THOUGHTFULLY to improve and enhance your mask design. Please be safe using the hot glue guns- if you are uncomfortable with them, please ask me for help.
