Express the information in your own words. (Write it down) Compare your paraphrase to the original text to check that you have used different words and different sentence structures but have kept the author’s meaning.

Change not only the words but also how they are presented. Writers may think “use your own words” just means to replace existing words with ones that hold similar meaning. This can result in losing the meaning of the original author’s work, or it can result in plagiarism if the construct of the sentences is similar.
