UNIT 5 SPACE EXPLORATION
TOPIC 1 – FOR OUR EYES ONLY
2
FRAMES OF REFERENCE -before we begin, we first need to know “where we are” and how to locate different objects from this place -to do this, we use a FRAME OF REFERENCE a set of points (axes) of any kind that is used to find the position or motion of objects Set objects that help us compare our location and/or speed Ex. We use LATITUDE and LONGNITUDE to find our position on Earth (2 sets of points) Ex. Streets and Avenues to find our location in a city
3
Frame of Reference will shift based on individual location.
Like points of view, different Frames of Reference are neither correct or incorrect. They are just different. North American World Map Australian World Map
4
Consider the following situation:
-we can also use this to determine the speed (motion) of objects by comparing our position to theirs Consider the following situation: 1. A car is moving north at 60 km/h. The driver sees a sign beside the road ahead of him. What is the velocity of the SIGN: 60km/hr N Relative to the car, the sign is APPROACHING the car at a rate of km/hr. a.) relative to the car? b.) relative to the ground? Relative to the ground, the sign is travel at a rate of 0 km/hr.
