If you grab a cat by the tail, you learn things
you can’t learn any other way. ~ Mark Twain
3
Warm Up Activity: Matching Cards
Find your matches! Introduce yourself! Can you guess your plant? Answers on page 14 (Teacher’s Manual)! Groups share fun plant facts!
4
Session Targets/Objectives:
Explore the curriculum structure, content, materials and sequence Identify learning targets (objectives/standards) and create simplistic lesson plans you can implement “tomorrow” Select appropriate assessment strategies
5
Today’s Agenda Session Targets/Objectives Lesson 1 – “A Fair Test”
Possible notebook set up Lesson Template and examples First three lessons completed for you! Lesson 2 – “What do you know about experiments?” Formative Assessment Idea and Vocab Flaps 5-10 min break Lesson 3 – “Outlining the Experiment” Student jobs and material management Discussion: Lesson 9 Systems Incorporation Notebook Checks (Option for tracking) Possible work time!
6
Purpose of Notebooks: Focus activities (Targets)
Collect and record initial thoughts, data, observations and final conclusions (revise initial thoughts) Communication tool – self, peer, teacher Tool for evaluation/assessment and lesson modification
7
Notebook Expectations….
Table of Contents Pages Title/Date Students complete all work – notebook check quizzes Students can use to study
8
Lesson 9 or 10 Idea… Yes, do the lesson…it’s good, but also…
Create a format Share where students can pull info from Discuss scientific method
9
Lesson continued… Question: Including the variable being manipulated. Hypothesis (Prediction): Materials: Look at lesson 3’s sheet # 2 Individual Data (Raw): Describe the data collected (make copies of individual’s work) Group Data: Group created graph (experimental- plant avgs and controlled plant avgs) Observations: Select stand out observations made about the controlled plants and the experimental plants (make copies of individual’s work) Conclusion: Restate Question, give avg. group data for control and experimental plants, determine hypothesis correct or incorrect (and why), and provide a summary of learning. Other – Groups will create a poster displaying all of this information (and anything else they’ve done). Each step will need to be guided before students are expected to complete.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
Systems Major state standard Explore where a “systems analysis” could fit into the unit What type of lesson/activity could you do? Think-Pair-Share #1 Most Missed Question on 7th Grade MSP = “Where does the majority of Earth’s energy come from?” AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
11
Notebook Quizzes… Simply select between 5-10 questions from the notebook… Example Questions: On 5/18 we read about the Brassica. What is the common name for the Brassica? Please rewrite the variable your group selected for your plant experiment. What is your hypothesis? Name the professor who created Wisconsin Fast Plants.

Teacher Work Time! Work in groups (2-4)
Work through lesson – questions welcome! Share out lesson plans?!
