Energy Flow in Ecosystems
(text ref. page 38-41)
2
Starting Activity: “Picturing” Energy Flow
Draw a picture of a flower. Illustrate in your diagram (using arrows, words and images): What plants need in order to grow. What plants provide us with.
3
Learning Goals We are learning about energy flow in ecosystems.
We are learning to compare photosynthesis and respiration.
4
Energy Flow in Ecosystems
all organisms require energy to live the source of this energy is radiant energy which comes from the sun light energy cannot be used by most animals, it must be converted into chemical energy
5
Energy Flow in Ecosystems Cont’d…
Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration What is it? Substances it Uses (reactants) Substances it Makes (products) Chemical Equation Which living things carry out this process? Where does it take place? Why is it important?
6
carbon dioxide + water sugar + oxygen
Photosynthesis photosynthesis is the process in which the Sun’s light energy is converted to chemical energy (food) carbon dioxide + water sugar + oxygen
7
Photosynthesis Cont’d…
photosynthesis can only be carried out by green plants and certain microscopic organisms takes place in the chloroplast of plant cells (chlorophyll (a green pigment) absorbs the light) provides energy (food) and oxygen to sustain all life
8
sugar + oxygen carbon dioxide + water + energy
Cellular Respiration cellular respiration: the process in which energy is released from food sugar + oxygen carbon dioxide + water + energy
9
Cellular Respiration Cont’d…
ALL organisms (plants too!!) undergo cellular respiration Occurs in the mitochondria of cells releases the energy animals need to live and provides carbon dioxide for photosynthesis *Note*: photosynthesis and cellular respiration are complementary processes
10
Learning Goals We are learning about energy flow in ecosystems.
We are learning to compare photosynthesis and respiration.

Game: I Have… Who Has… Shuffle and deal the cards evenly to all group members. The person with “I have the First Card” begins. He/she reads their card & places it on the desk. Players look through their hand for the answer and the play continues until all cards are lined up in order on the desks.

Homework Read pages 38-41 Answer questions # 2, 5, 9, 11, 12 on page 41
