1 Egleston Childrens Hospital – Triage
Tour given by: Amanda Hardy, RN, BSN Use TAPP – Triage Assessment Pull Process Physicians and Nurses treat some patients in the triage area Reduced the amount of patients in the ED treatment rooms Reduces length of stay in the ER for minor acuity patients Requires good communication between Triage station and ER Nursing station Requires flexible Physicians to move between ER and Triage Separating the sick (contagious illnesses) and injured is vital in the ER Reduces the spread of communicable diseases Allows nurses to treat similar patients near each other Standardized cabinets and labels in every room helps reduce treatment time and makes restocking inventory easier Use a Nurse Server – system where cabinets in rooms are accessible from the hallway. This reduces the amount of traffic in the treatment rooms and allows for trash to be emptied without opening cabinets inside a patients treatment area The trauma room used a mobile beam that contained all of the gasses, electrical plugs, testing and monitoring equipment. The beam could be moved around the patient at the head of the bed. Uses Point of Care testing in the ER so that some labs do not have to be sent away for results. 2 Observations There were 3 triage rooms
Blinds were contained in the windows – reduces collection of dust and bodily fluid There was not much space for family members – It is a children’s hospital which means there will always be a parent and more than likely an additional child – need more room Uses foam hand sanitizer – the sink in the Triage rooms were not accessible, blocked by a scale Effectively used colors in the hospital for treatment aids – bright red and orange increases cardiac flow (important in EKG room), green has a calming effect (waiting room color) The design of the Triage area was based on ER space and not the process Halcik, Nair, & Thompson--Triage Space 10/7/2008
