Functions of the Lymphatic and Immune Systems
Lymph Fluid and Vessels (lymph/o): Returns cellular waste and tissue fluid to the circulatory system Lymph Nodes (lymph/o, adeno/o): Produces lymphocytes and filters harmful substances from lymph Tonsils and Adnoids (tonsill/o, adenoid/o): Protects the entry into the respiratory system

Continued Spleen (spleen/o): Filters foreign materials from the blood, stores red blood cells, and destroys worn out blood cells Bone Marrow (myel/o): Produces blood cells Lymphocytes (lymph/o, cyte): Plays an important role in immune reactions Immune System (immun/o): Defends the body against harmful substances such as allergens, toxins, and malignant cells

Medical Specialties: Allergist: Specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions of altered immunologic allergic reactions Hematologist: Specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders of the blood Immunologist: Specializes in the study, diagnosis, and treatment of the immune system Oncologist: A specialist in diagnosing and treating malignant disorders such as tumors and cancer.
