5 Portrait of Felix Feneon, 1890
By Paul Signac Signac painted his friend, who was an art critic The other “founding father” of pointillism

6 Concentric Circles, Wassily Kandinsky
Watercolor, gouache, crayon Not a completed work- actually a small study To Kandinsky, color was the soul of an artwork He was a synesthete

7 Several Circles, Wassily Kandinsky
"The circle," claimed Kandinsky, "is the synthesis of the greatest oppositions. It combines the concentric and the eccentric in a single form and in equilibrium. Of the three primary forms, it points most clearly to the fourth dimension."

8 Mona Lisa, Gavin Rain Inspired by George Seurat? Does not blend colors
Up close, it looks very abstract Inspired by Wassily Kandinsky?

9 How do we paint?

10 Ballerina brush Has three parts: ALWAYS on her tippy toes
Handle Ferrule Bristles ALWAYS on her tippy toes NEVER on her bottom

11 How do we use watercolors?
Mix with water- not too much, not too little. NEVER double dip ALWAYS rinse between colors ALWAYS wipe on sponge after rinsing NEVER mix colors on the pan ALWAYS mix colors on the palettes

12 Ms. Delgado!!! My water is dirty
Before you ask: Is it really dirty, or just tinted? If it’s making your colors look muddy, RAISE your hand and ask for permission to replace the water. Once I give you permission: ONE person must carry the water bowl to the sink Pour the water out carefully Refill to the halfway point.

13 Making our own dot art Split your paper into four parts using a pencil. You will paint one sketch in each part. Each sketch must: Be DOT art Have color

14 PUT YOUR BRUSHES DOWN! IT IS TIME TO CLEAN UP!! Do NOT keep working
Place all brushes in the water bowl Wait for me to call on your table!

15 CLEAN UP (WAIT UNTIL I CALL YOUR TABLE!!!!)
ONE person: empty out the water bowl and wash your table’s brushes. Also rinse out the sponge. TWO people: take the watercolor pans to the big tables along the wall and leave them with the lids OPEN TWO people: CAREFULLY place all artwork in the drying rack
