Presentation on theme: "Elements and Compounds"— Presentation transcript:

1 Elements and Compounds
YOU NEED: a sheet of notebook paper, a highlighter and your text book turned to page 64.

2 What is an element? Cannot be broken down into simpler substances
The smallest unit of a substance is a particle called an atom. Made up of only 1 type of atom.

3 What is a compound? These form when two or more elements combine chemically. (Remember an element is made of only one substance/atom.)

4 What is the difference?

5 Biomolecules/Organic Compounds
Fold your sheet of paper into 4 parts. Label each section one of the biomolecules from above.

6 What compounds do cell need?
Many compounds in living things contain the element carbon. Organic compounds contain carbon. Examples: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids Inorganic compounds do not contain carbon. Examples: Water is an extremely important and necessary inorganic compound of life.

7 Carbohydrates Energy rich organic compounds
Made of Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen Glucose, a sugar, is produced during photosynthesis. Starch is stored energy for plants. Cellulose is a plant’s cell wall is a carbohydrate.

8 Lipids Made of Carbon, Hydrogen, and some Oxygen
Lipids help build the cell membrane. Fats, Oils, and Waxes are lipids. Stored Energy for Animals

9 Proteins Made of Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen
Most of a cell’s structure and function depend on these. Enzymes speed up chemical reactions and without these the chemical reactions would be too slow to maintain life. Why an amino acid line?

10 Nucleic Acids Made of Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus These contain the instructions/code that cells need to carry out all the life functions. DNA: Most Found in Nucleus; Shape of a DOUBLE HELIX; Genetic Material that is passed form parent to offspring. RNA: Messenger, Transfer, and Ribosomal

11 Is it a compound, element, or Mickey Mouse?

12 INORGANIC, Water Most chemical reactions in cells depend on substances that must be dissolved in water to react. Water is a necessary ingredient in many chemical reactions. Water helps the cell keep its shape. (Example: Large Vacuole in Plants) Water changes temperature slowly, so helpful with homeostasis in cells. Water is used in transport in and out of cells.

13 Instructions for Biomolecules Poster
You will draw your rough draft on the sheet of notebook paper you folded. Each section represents an organic compound needed for living things which you labeled earlier. In each section, draw a picture that represents what the word/compound means. Fill up the whole square with your picture. Write 1 fact about that compound in the box with the picture. The poster has to have color and be neat! BIG, BRIGHT, BOLD and BEAUTIFUL!!
