F l a g s Pict ure her e Materials & Explanations 2. English/TL Flags Used for: Displaying and clarifying which language the classroom is using at that time. How: Change them with a talking bubble whenever you need to

2. English Circle Used for: Option for using your 10% English (mother tongue). Usually when you want to say something quick. How: Step on the circle when you want to use English (Students may not  )

3. Red Card Used for: Students self-monitoring use of English while in the target language. How: Start by teacher passing out to first student who uses English and then students continue the rest of the class.

4. Consequence Used for: Incentive to pass the red card and monitor their peers. How: Last student with with the red card in hand must do a student made consequence.

5. Beans Used for: Positive reinforcement for speaking the target language (individually at first- then benefits class) How: Teacher or student (called on) passes out beans whenever appropriate and then beans are collected for the class jar at the end of the period.

6. Points Used for: Positive reinforcement for the entire class behavior, TL, questions of clarification, etc. How: Teacher tally points on board whenever appropriate and log at the end of the class period

10 Practice in Partners Talk with a partner about your best lesson plan and when you would use 10% English. 3 minutes Both people must talk! 2 volunteers share their ideas please!

11 Tips and tricks of how to not look an idiot while doing this 
Start from day #1 Teacher start with red card every day 3. 1, 2, 3, on hands for bathroom, vocab, grammar 4. Hold yourself to the same expectations as the students—it’s frustrating at times but it works  5. Go easy on yourself 6. Encourage all uses of language 7. Take the cards seriously as the teacher 8. Modify with push-back 9. Trust and believe in your students to grow and get better throughout the year 10. Reap the benefits as time goes on 
