2
Waves Phenomena: plural word for phenomenon
3
Phenomenon a fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen, especially one whose cause or explanation is in question: “ Glaciers are unique and interesting natural phenomena.”
4
More phenomenon Weather Tornadoes Volcano eruptions Thunderclap
5
Many phenomena in the known universe are described by the mathematical concept of waves.
6
Remember definition of a wave is…
the motion of a disturbance between two points
7
Dropped pebble, causes waves on the surface of a still pond.
8
Type of waves Transverse waves made up of oscillations that are perpendicular to the direction that the wave travels For example light
9
Longitudinal wave The oscillations are parallel to the direction that the waves travel Sound is an example
10
Regardless of the classification
Waves are cause by a vibration of some kind Example, sound waves originate from vibrations of matter, such as a person’s vocal chords or guitar string, which initiate a sequence of collisions between air molecules that eventually reaches your eardrum.
11
Note Waves transport energy but no mass. Waves do not carry matter along with them from one point to another as they travel.
13
Floating buoy Bobbing up and down in the ocean
Height changes with time but the position does not change
14
Same with a sound wave Is not carried by individual air molecules moving all the way to the source to your ear.
16
Remember Mechanical waves
A wave that requires a physical medium through which to propagate
17
Remember electromagnetic waves
Do not require a physical medium through which to propagate
18
Propagate Spread and promote widely
Transmit or be transmitted in a particular direction or through a medium
19
Sun and other stars reaches earth
Through electromagnetic waves
20
Speed of light Electromagnetic waves traveling through empty space never speed up or slow down This follows the energy of conservation…which is?
21
Electromagnetic spectrum
We are surrounded by undulating sea of electromagnetic waves For example, radio waves, gamma rays, etc.
22
Electromagtic spectrum
A classification of electromagnetic waves by frequency or wavelength.
23
