1 Water Notes

2 Water is a polar molecule.
A water molecule is Polar because there is an uneven distribution of electrons between the oxygen and hydrogen atoms. The hydrogen end is positive and the hydrogen end is negative.

3 Cohesion- water molecules are attracted to other water molecules.
This creates Surface Tension- this means water is able to resist rupturing when under pressure; creates a “film” on top of the water.

4 Hydrogen Bonds Water molecules adhere to each other using WEAK hydrogen bonds.

5 Adhesion- water molecules are attracted to different molecules

6 Adhesion and Cohesion Together create Capillary Action
Capillary Action allows water to move against gravity from the roots of a plant to the leaves or flowers.

7 Water = Universal Solvent, dissolves ALMOST anything (Not lipids)
Solutions are composed mostly of water ex) Salt Water Solute – The substance being dissolved. Ex) salt Solvent – The substance in which the solute dissolves. Ex) water
