Doctorate for Nurse Educators Alice March In order to address the shortage of nurses and help improve the quality of nurse preparation programs, in 2005 the Capstone College of Nursing and the College of Education at The University of Alabama combined to establish a doctoral program in nurse education. Stephen Tomlinson Over the past decade we have graduated more than 70 students with the teaching and research skills necessary for a productive academic career and the knowledge that will help them become instructional leaders within the field.

Doctorate for Nurse Educators Alice March The course of study is designed for working professionals who want to earn a high quality degree through a distance education program. Stephen Tomlinson To meet these goals, we admit annual cohorts and offer classes though a combination of weekend college course and online instruction.

Doctorate for Nurse Educators Michelle Montgomery Not only does this model help promote the kind of scholarly community necessary for advanced study, it greatly constitutes to our low attrition rates and timely graduation schedule. Becky Atkinson Fall and spring semesters require four Friday night, all day Saturday campus meetings, summer classes are online. Three years of coursework is followed by a dissertation study that typically takes a further 18 months.

We pride ourselves that this is a nationally recognized program that offers rich and diverse perspectives across multiple healthcare environments. Becky Atkinson We also boast the achievements of our graduates, very many of whom have made notable achievements as teachers, researchers, and academic leaders.

Doctorate for Nurse Educators Vivian Wright Each class involves students in research and teaching activates, preparing for comprehensive examinations styled on a presentation at an academic conference. Cecil Robinson Classes are made up completely of nurse education students, and all committees—including the dissertation team—are composed of an equal number of nursing and education faculty.

Doctorate for Nurse Educators Nirmala Erevelles We draw upon nationally recognized faculty in Education and Nursing, many of whom have taught in this program for over ten years. Josh Eyer Many of our students publish their research and work cooperatively on scholarly projects with faculty after graduation.

Doctorate for Nurse Educators Nirmala Erevelles The dissertation is the culmination of the doctoral degree; a guided research study of publishable quality. We have designed this program to equip students with the disciplinary knowledge, methodological skills, and, importantly, the close support and faculty mentorship necessary to successful completion of this project. Josh Eyer We have low attrition rates and a short average time to degree compared with other doctoral programs. Moreover, our graduates earn reputation for excellence that can only be acquired at a leading research university.

Doctorate for Nurse Educators Alice March As a distance learning program, tuition is offered at a reduced rate, making the program both convenient and affordable. One flat rate regardless of residency $360 per graduate credit hour Financial assistance is also available through the Nurse Faculty Loan Program. Loan amounts are based on the number of credit hours a student registers for each semester. The loan recipients may cancel up to 85% of the loan over four years in return for serving full-time as faculty in any accredited school of nursing.
