Goal – To share the specifics of a successful process for Guided Pathway cornerstones for Community College Baccalaureate Programs. Guided pathways, community college BAs and apprenticeship are the focus of a great deal of national attention. This presentation will take guided pathways beyond traditional associates degrees demonstrate how these techniques can be applied to the community college baccalaureate. The presentation will also highlight the use of professional certificates and apprenticeship along the pathway.

Rapid Growth – 1/3 of States Offer CCBAs
7
National View of Community College Baccalaureates
Over 20 state - nearly 100 CC are offering about 900 baccalaureate programs across the country Fall 2019 Sinclair - unmanned aerial systems Niche degrees local workforce need skills /desire to advance into a supervisory level. Expanding CC mission to serve the needs of their local communities. A review CC bachelor’s programs constitute less than 10% of their overall program offerings. CCBA 2017 Just up the road, Youngstown State University offers a somewhat similar four-year degree, in mechanical engineering technology — but tuition there is double Sinclair’s. Community colleges have been created to meet the needs of their local population, and local employers and to prepare their citizens for work by expanding access to higher education (Cohen, 2003; Floyd et al., 2005). One-third of students attending CCs are enrolled in occupational programs and they graduate with Associate of Applied Science degrees. These students graduating from occupational programs encounter obstacles and difficulties when transferring to four-year universities (American Association of Community Colleges, 2004; Silverberg, Warner, Fong,&Goodwin, 2004). In response, AB degrees havebeen developed by community colleges to provide a seamless pathway to baccalaureate degree attainmentfor students graduating with occupational degrees (Bragg, Townsend,&Ruud, 2009; Floyd&Walker,2009).

Why the BAS Builds on foundation of technical degree, work experience or apprenticeships Focuses on “application” not just theory Is an adult learning model Prior Learning Assessment allows credits to be earned from non-traditional methods 60 – 60 – 60 instead of or straight 180

What are Guided Pathways ?
“Highly structured, coherent educational experience that is built around and through an area of study” AACC 2014 “An integrated, institution-wide approach to student success based on intentionally designed, clear, coherent and structured educational experiences, informed by available evidence, that guide each student effectively and efficiently from her/his point of entry through to attainment of high-quality postsecondary credentials and careers with value in the labor market.” CCRD and AACC Pathways Project 2017
10
Guided Pathways Institutions
Three design principles: Attention to the entire student experience A framework for helping students choose, enter, and complete a program aligned with their goals for employment and further education Starts with student end goals in mind and “backward maps” to ensure preparation for success at next level
11
Guided Pathways dimensions and practices
Clarify paths to student end goals Program maps (to completion, further education, and employment) Establish transfer pathways Help students choose and enter a pathway Accelerated bridge programs “On-ramps” (integrate and contextualize instruction) Help students stay on path Academic and non-academic supports Ensure that students are learning Integrate learning outcomes, internships, and applied learning experiences
