1 Ambient Optic Array Gibson
a set of 4 rules for decoding motion Compare the pole with the direction in which other objects are moving in the environment OPTIC FLOW Flow AWAY from observer = APPROACH Flow TOWARDS observer = RETREAT The direction the pole faces = direction of travel Changes in flow = changes in direction of motion

2 Optic Array Ambient optic array is how light is structured by objects and surfaces Gibson said we have a set of 4 rules for decoding motion First we compare the pole (aka the origin of motion, or us) with the direction in which other objects are moving in the environment (aka the ambient array, what we can see) OPTIC FLOW, or object motion, in the ambient array means that the observer is in motion so no flow means there is no motion Flow AWAY from observer indicates you are approach something, flow TOWARDS observer indicates you are retreat from something The direction the pole faces, in other words the direction we face, indicates direction we are traveling in Changes in pole direction are indicated by changes in flow and array, these indicate that the observer has changed direction of motion
