2 Direct Quotations Use a set of quotation marks to enclose the EXACT words a person says. EX: Lauren said, “I brought your lunch.” EX: “She left it on the desk,” Jim whispered.

You must include the following components in a direct quotation: 1. Exact words being quoted 2. Quotation marks “ ” 3. Speaker and how he/she said it 4. Comma or commas

5 Anatomy of a Direct Quotation

6 Using Direct Quotations to Cite Dialogue
Add a citation at the end of a cited direct quotation before you end the sentence with a period. “It’s really a new day for us,” Wangero declared to her sister (109). “That’s my house!” Mead thought (61). Tom Benecke screamed, “Clare!” (26).
