Math Log #12 The amount a babysitter charges is shown. Is the relationship between the number of hours and the amount charged linear? If so, find the constant rate of change. Is the relationship proportional? Explain your reasoning for both. Hours Charge 1 $10 2 $18 3 $26 4 $34

Math Log #12 I - The amount a babysitter charges is shown. Is the relationship between the number of hours and the amount charged linear? If so, find the constant rate of change. Is the relationship proportional? Explain your reasoning for both. C - Hour Charge 1 $10 2 $18 3 $26 4 $34 +1 +8 +1 +8 +1 +8 A – The relationship is linear because the rate is constant. The rate is $8 per hour. The relationship is not proportional because the charge per hour changes as time increases. N - Neighbor

Outcome I can use tables and graphs to find the slope of a line.
4
SLOPE What is that?
5
Discuss the effect of steepness on the performance of each.
B C
6
The mathematical term for steepness is…
SLOPE The mathematical term for steepness is… SLOPE
7
Definitions Slope – the rate of change between any two points on a line. Rise – the vertical(up and down) change between any two points on a line. Run - the horizontal(left and right) change between any two points on a line.
8
Title the Next Clean Page in Your Booklet: (top half) Finding the Slope Using a Graph
Finding the slope is the same as finding the rate of change because slope IS a rate of change.
9
Each pair of coordinates have an (x,y)
Title the Next Clean Page in Your Booklet: (bottom half) Finding the Slope Using Coordinates or a Table Each pair of coordinates have an (x,y)

Turn to the Next Clean Page(top half) and Title It:
Types of Slope A line that rises from left to right 1. Positive Slope A line falls from left to right 2. Negative Slope A line is horizontal 3. Zero Slope 4. Undefined Slope The line is vertical

Remember This! 2. Negative Slope 1. Positive Slope 3. Zero Slope
4. Undefined Slope

To find out, you can calculate the ramp’s slope.
Steepness Wakeboarding How steep is a wakeboard ramp like the one shown? To find out, you can calculate the ramp’s slope. The slope of a line is the ratio of the line’s vertical change, called the rise, to its horizontal change, called the run.
13
Slope = Slope = The Slope Ratio vertical rise = 10 Remember to always
simplify the ratio. horizontal run = 5
