Alcohol Canadian prohibition was the result of generations of effort to close taverns, bars etc, which was a major cause of drunkenness and violence among men. Prohibition before the war was not so bad, though some local municipal bans were placed in late 19th century to provincial bans in the 20th century. And finally, national bans placed in 1918, used as a temporary temperance measure. Temperance act lasted from 1916 to 1927 (in Ontario)
