THE SONG OF ISAIAH
2
Isa. 12:1, “And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me. Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.
3
And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted. Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.”
4
This song is a doxology. It is two-fold: in the first part, the redeemed, in their own names and persons, praise God for the benefits of salvation and consolation through Christ, conferred upon them. In the second part they mutually exhort and encourage themselves and others, to praise and celebrate their God and Redeemer.
5
I. IN THAT DAY GOD WILL TURN
6
“And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me.”
7
Psa. 119:39, “Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good.”
Isa. 59:20, “And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.”
8
DELIVERANCE Rom. 6:17, “But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.”
9
II. IN THAT DAY I WILL TRUST
10
“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.”
11
Isaiah says the people will trust in the God of their salvation for three reasons:
(1) God is our strength: Psalm 18:32, “It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.”
12
(2) God is our song: Psa. 42:8, “Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the day time, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.”
13
(3) God is our salvation: Psa
(3) God is our salvation: Psa. 18:46, “The Lord liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.” 1 Thess. 5:9, “For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ.”
14
III. IN THAT DAY I WILL TESTIFY
15
“And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted. Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.”
16
1. Call Upon His Name Jer. 10:25, “Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.”
17
Psa. 55:16, “As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lordshall save me.”
Act 22:16, “And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.”
18
2. Declare His Doings Psa. 9:11, “Sing praises to the Lord, which dwelleth in Zion: declare among the people his doings.” Psalm 77:12, “I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.”
19
3. Exalt His Name Psa. 21:13, “Be thou exalted, Lord, in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power.” Psa. 34:2, “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.”
20
4) He Has Done Excellent Things
Prov. 8:6, “Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.”
21
His Creation: Psa. 8:3, “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained.”
22
His Salvation: Heb. 2:3, “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him.”
23
“This is known in all the earth.”
More properly, “Let this be known in all the earth.” Psa. 89:1, “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.”
24
Rom. 1:8, “First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.” Col. 1:23, “If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister.”
25
5) He Has Done Great Things For His People
“Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.”
26
For what they must praise the Lord. 1. Because he has glorified himself. Remember it yourselves, and make mention of it to others, that his name is exalted, has become more illustrious and more conspicuous; in this every good man rejoices.
27
2. Because he has magnified his people: He has done excellent things for them, which make them look great and considerable. 3. Because he is, and will be, great among them: Great is the Holy One, for he is glorious in holiness.
