7 Quote # 1 “The idea is if we don’t look out all the white race will be—will be utterly submerged. It’s all scientific stuff; it’s been proved”(17). Who is speaking? What is the context? (What is the event surrounding the quote?) What does it reveal about the character? (Go beyond the obvious.)

8 Quote # 2 “I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool” (21). Who is speaking? What is the context? What does it reveal about the character?

9 Quote # 3 “She might have the decency not to phone him at dinner-time. Don’t you think?” (20). Who is speaking? What is the context? What might it reveal about the characters?

10 Quote # 4 "He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward and distinguished nothing except a single green light” (26). Who is speaking? What is the context? What might it reveal about the character on the dock? What might the “green light” represent?

11 Your turn! Find one other quote in the text (past the first two pages) that you feel is significant in understanding the characters and/or setting. Please search beyond the first few pages. Do the following: Write the quote and the page number. Who is speaking? Context of the quote? Significance of the quote?

12 Chapter 2 Discussion (10-15 min)
In small groups (No more than four to a group!): Discuss the article from yesterday. Define the American Dream (based on article) Identify aspects of the American Dream that might prove to be a challenge for everyone to achieve Discuss what types of people might have difficulty reaching those goals. Apply your discussion to Ch. 1 & 2 of The Great Gatsby Which of the characters have achieved the American Dream? Why? How? Who hasn’t? Why do you think that is? Based on your discussion, what do you think the message of this book is going to be?

13 Chapter 2 Discussion (Remaining Time)
Individually: Write two to three questions that you have about the text so far (Ch.1 and Ch. 2). Questions should be those that require analysis or evaluation. Avoid questions that simply require you to remember a fact from the text. Tomorrow, we will get into small groups to share and discuss our questions. The reading of Chapter 3 will be due on Monday.
