Chapter 8
2
Nick’s dreams propel him to warn Gatsby
Nick’s dreams propel him to warn Gatsby. Tells him to get out of town, but won’t leave when there is still a chance that Daisy will come to him. Misplaced faith: Fitzgerald suggests that the problem with America is this same misplaced faith in the sanctity of material wealth which is as unworthy of worship as Daisy.
3
Nick says “he (Gatsby) is worth the whole damn bunch put together”.
He is able to say this, despite his total disapproval of the man, because he approves of Gatsby’s strength of belief and the generous nature of his idealism.
4
Gatsby’s greatness lies in the magnificence of his gestures, in his whole hearted dedication to a romantic idea and in his unselfish nature (this is what makes Gatsby “great”)
