Style The choices an author makes in diction, syntax, figurative language, and other literary devices. Also, the classification of authors to a group based on their use of the above elements.

Example of Style In Chapter 3 of Brave New World, Aldous Huxley’s style becomes apparent when he shifts between lines of dialogue from several different conversations.

Syllogism A form of deductive reasoning in which a conclusion is drawn based off of pieces of evidence.

Example of a Syllogism An example of a syllogism is “I am allergic to dogs, and my cousin’s pet is a dog, so I will feel sick when I am at my cousin’s house.” It draws a conclusion from two separate premises.

Symbol An object that stands for something else.

Example of a Symbol In The Great Gatsby, the green light is a symbol representing Daisy as well as Gatsby’s goals and aspirations.

Syntax The way words are arranged in a sentence.

Example of Syntax Differences in syntax are shown by the sentences: “That is my pencil.” and “That pencil is mine.” They use roughly the same words, but arranged differently.

Tension A feeling of excitement and expectation felt by the audience.

Example of Tension In Night, Elie Wiesel builds tension by foreshadowing the eventual death of his father.
