University System of Georgia Core Curriculum
The Core Curriculum of the University System of Georgia was established for the purpose of facilitating the educational progress of students as they pursue baccalaureate degrees within and among the University System. The Core Curriculum of the USG establishes the philosophy that “General Education” is the “Foundation” of all degree programs! USG has created an agreement with all the USG Schools to honor each schools Core Curriculum. This ensures that one schools core will transfer to another. This is to help students continue on an educational progress without being hindered.

University System of Georgia Core Policy
Area A1 – Communication Skills Area A2 – Quantitative Skills Area B (B1-B2) – Institutional Options Area C (C1-C2) – Humanities/Fine Arts,&Ethics Area D (D1,D2/D2-B) – Natural Sciences, Math, & Technology Area E (E1,E2,E3,E4) – Social Sciences At least 6 semester hours At least 3 semester hours At least 4-5 semester hours At least 6 semester hours At least semester hours At least 12 semester hours USG Core Curriculum was developed with goals of assuring institutional accountability, allowing institutions some flexibility in tailoring courses to their institutional mission, while ensuring that core curriculum courses completed at on USG institution are fully transferable to another USG institution. All core curriculum requirements must be completed as part of the associate and bachelor degree programs. The table about is UWG’s core curriculum. Each school can set up their own core so as to work with their degree programs. (See attachment for specific courses)

Transfer Guarantee “Areas A – E”
Kennesaw State University University of West Georgia Stipulations: The course is within the area hours limitations of either the sending institution or the receiving institution. The student does not change from a non-science major to a science major. This guarantee does not apply to institutions outside of the University System of Georgia. Students successfully completing a core course at a USG institution (Areas A–E) will be able to transfer these core courses and receive full credit in Areas A–E upon transferring to another USG institution as long as the following conditions are met. There are some stipulations… Since each institution can organize their own core courses, there are minimum credit hours that must be met in each core area. Once those have been met the institution can change it as needed to fit their degree programs. This is why the areas hours could change between each institution. Students who decide to change their majors might be required to take another course or two to satisfy the core, since each schools degree programs are different.

USG Core Examples: UWG vs ATL Metro
B1 B1 B2 Here is an example of Core Area B, UWG has a B1 and a B2 vs Atlanta Metro has only a B1. This is an example of what a student may experience transfer to UWG from ATL Metro. If they have not already taken a course that help fulfill the core area B hours, they might be required to take another course, or our Wolf Watch Analyst (Wanda Edison) might be about to help balance out core B to help satisfy it. You will also notice that ATL only requires their students one course to satisfy their core B, but UWG has multiple course options.

Wolf Watch Core Example
Here is an example of Wolf Watch and how certain courses fall into the core. This helps us to be able to work with transfer students to make sure they are fulfilling their core if they are transferring from a USG school. You can also see off to the right how many hours are required/applied to help with advising currently enrolled students. You also have access to BanWeb when Wolf Watch has not been activated.

Transfer Equivalents Possible equivalents are: SUBJ 0XXX-No Credit
SUBJ 1XXX, 2XXX, 3XXX, or 4XXX-Elective Direct UWG equivalent (Ex: ENGL 1101) Here is a review of possible equivalents that are given to transfer students when we are evaluating their transcripts. This review will help you better understand the equivalency tool we will be going over next. When a course transfers in it will either be assigned an 0XXX, 1XXX, 2XXX, 3XXX, 4XXX, or a direct UWG equivalent, with its corresponding SUBJ (example ENGL, MATH, or PSYC).

Transfer Equivalency Tool
Quarter Semester “Westga.edu/transfer” UWG course equivalents listed are for reference only. All course equivalents are subject to change upon official evaluations by the UWG Office of the Registrar. The listing or exclusion of courses from this program does not reflect on the acceptability of the courses to UWG. Students do not receive an evaluation until they have been accepted by Admissions. We do not complete unofficial evaluations. Prospective students should view the Transfer Equivalency Tool for possible transfer credits Go to westga.edu/transfer and choose state and then the school the student is transferring from. Above is an example of ATL Metro’s courses and their equivalents at UWG (only if the course from ATL Metro has already been reviewed here at UWG). You can see ACCT 2101 from ATL Metro will transfer to UWG as ACCT 2101. Remember Quarter courses and Semester courses will be listed on the equivalency tool. Quarter courses will have 3 digits course numbers (example ACCT 201) versus Semester courses will have 4 (example ACCT 2101). When advising a student remember to use the Semester courses unless the student is coming from a school currently on the Quarter system (Example Georgia Military College). This tool is a Reference only, it changes daily, and contains real time data.

Transfer Credit Re-Evaluation Form
Student completed ENGL 1100 at UA, awarded credit for ENGL 1XXX at UWG. Student believes it should be ENGL 1101. Department Chair decisions are final. 3000/4000 level credit cannot be awarded for a 1000/2000 level course. This form is used when a student and/or advisor feels a student should have received credit for a UWG course that was not awarded. The student will need to provide a description and/or syllabus of the course taken at their previous institution. The department chair will review the description and will either assign the course with an exact equivalent, elective credit, or no credit. Please read over this form carefully when filling it out. Next step is to check the box to either apply it to only this student’s record or to all future students. The Department Chair’s decision is final. Courses can be revaluated if the Department Chair changes. We cannot award 3000/4000 level credit for 1000/2000 level courses. 3000/4000 level courses can go down (example ENGL 3000, it is very similar to UWG ENGL 2000, so we would award it as ENGL 2000). There may be times we will have students transferring in from school that we have not evaluated currently, in this case we may send the department chair a similar form from the transfer team asking them to review the incoming course for a correct equivalent.
