SCIENCE TOOLS To become a successful scientists, we must be able to identify and use scientific instruments or tools. These tools are for collecting data, taking measurements, and recording observations. Scientists use a variety of tools to do investigations.
3
Science Notebook A science tool for recording observations, measurements, and analyzing results
4
Hand Lens A tool that magnifies objects or makes objects look larger than they are.
5
Microscope A tool that magnifies at a much higher power than a hand lens. It magnifies smaller objects not easily visible with the naked eye.
6
Telescope A tool used to see objects in the sky.
It magnifies or makes objects in the sky larger.
7
Meter Stick A meter tool that is used to measure distance and the length of objects. It tells how long an object is. In science, we use the metric system for measuring.
8
Thermometer A tool used to measure temperature.
It measures the temperature of air and most liquids. The Greek prefix “therm” means “heat”.
9
Compass A tool for telling directions.
It is used to find Earth’s magnetic north pole.
10
Stopwatch A tool used to measure time.
11
Balance A tool used to measure the mass of an object.
A balance tells the amount of matter an object contains. The mass of the rock to the right would be 350.6g
12
Spring Scale A spring scale measures the weight based on the force of gravity pulling down on an object. It consists of spring fixed at one end with a hook.
13
Test Tube A test tube is smaller than a beaker.
It is open at one end and closed at the other. It is cylindrical in shape.
14
Pipettes commonly used in chemistry, biology and medicine to transport a measured volume of liquid, often as a dispenser.
15
Beaker An open cylindrical container with a pouring lip.
It measures volume or the amount that is being held.
16
Graduated Cylinder A graduated cylinder is used to measure the volume of a liquid. The amount of liquid measured at the bottom of the liquid’s curve (meniscus).
17
Petri Dish A container used for samples or specimens.
A tool to culture microorganisms.
18
A tool used to heat objects.
Hot Plate A tool used to heat objects.
19
Magnet A magnet attracts and repels substances.
It is attracted or pulled to items with iron, nickel, or steel.
20
Collecting Net A tool used to gather animal samples or specimens such as butterflies.
21
Preventive Safety Equipment
Generally, safety equipment is the protection that is used by workers to avoid injuries, casualties, life threatening situations
22
Safety Goggles Eyewear that protects the eyes during a science experiment or investigation from hazardous or dangerous materials such as chemicals, glass, or heated materials.
23
Safety Glasses Prevent particles, water, or any harmful substance from getting into your eyes Lower level of protection; same as standard eye glasses
24
Fire Extinguisher a portable device that discharges a jet of water, foam, gas, or other material to extinguish a fire.
25
Fire Blanket designed to extinguish fires. It consists of a sheet of fire retardant material which is placed over a fire in order to smother it.
26
Lab Apron outer protective garment that covers primarily the front of the body; worn to protect clothes from wear and tear
27
Gloves often worn for hygiene and contamination protection measures.
