Title: Properties of Matter
Discuss: What is the difference between physical properties and chemical properties of matter?
2
Copy and complete the chart using the properties provided for each substance along with additional properties you observe Substance Physical property Chemical property Additional observations
3
What do all of the physical properties have in common?
What do all of the chemical properties have in common? Bonus: what was the reason some cards were pink and some were blue?
4
Properties of Matter Every pure substance (element or compound) has a specific set of properties. Properties of matter can be either physical or chemical.
5
Physical Properties Can be observed without changing the substance into another substance Examples: color state of matter density (mass per volume) freezing point (temperature at which a substance freezes) solubility (ability to dissolve) malleability (how easily a metal can be manipulated)
6
Chemical Properties Describes a substances ability to change into a different substance In other words, the ability or inability of a substance to react with another substance These properties can only be observed when a substance undergoes a chemical change Ex/ sodium has the ability to react with water, gold does not react with water
7
Homework Complete two four square vocabulary boxes for the terms:
1. Physical property 2. Chemical property
