SSC 3319 Junior Research Project
A required course for Year 3 or Year 4 students with Discipline Major(DM)/Stream assigned Pre-requisite : Methods course offered in your DM/Stream Provides a platform for students to employ and develop their research skills The work could be further developed to form part of students’ Senior Thesis (SSC 4319 Senior Thesis, optional)

Teaching Method Individual consultation/supervision –
students will have regular meetings (at least 4 times) and exchanges with their project supervisors throughout the term.

Assessment Scheme Mid-term progress report (1500-2500 words): 30%
Final report ( words, excluding references): 70%

Procedures (Term 1 & Term 2)
Receive JRP Form and list of available supervisors of each Disciple Major/Stream from of BSocSc Programme Office in July/August Visit teachers’ department page to find out what their research fields and interests are Select one teacher from your DM/Stream to be your individual supervisor of the project, decide the Junior Research topic with a brief description Get the approval from your individual supervisor and have his/her name signed on the JRP form Each teacher has his/her own quota to supervise students, once their quota is full, they will no longer be available Submit the form with supervisor’s signature to the Department Office by 6 September 2017* (Both Term 1 & Term 2)

SSC 4319 Senior Thesis Pre-requisite : SSC3319 Junior Research Project
An optional and personalized research project, conducted in student’s third/fourth year On one-to-one basis with staff specialized in their chosen research areas Allow students to build upon/modify the research topic and design that they have worked in SSC 3319 Junior Research Project Provides the opportunity to apply theories, research tools and techniques to implement the research and write up an independent thesis on their chosen topic

Teaching Method No lectures and tutorials
Each student will find an academic staff to serve as his/her supervisor and work on one-to-one basis to produce an independent research report

Assessment Scheme Final Thesis Report : 100%

Procedures (Term 1 & Term 2)
Peruse the “Area of Specialization of Staff” and get the Senior Thesis application form via the from BSocSc Programme Office in July/August Decide the Senior Thesis topic with a brief description Discuss the topics and proposals with your Senior Thesis supervisor Submit the form with supervisor’s signature to the Department Office by 6 September 2017* (Both Term 1 & Term 2)
