3 Objectives Plan the service area of a home by applying good design principles. Design a functional kitchen to meet a family’s needs. Plan an efficient laundry room. Describe appropriate dimensions for garage or carport space.

4 Introduction Supplements the living and sleeping areas of the house
Supplies equipment and space for: Maintenance Storage Service Includes kitchen, laundry room, mudroom, garage or carport, utility or storage space

6 Kitchen Purpose is food preparation
Other uses include informal dining and entertaining Usually the most expensive room in the house per square foot

7 Kitchen Planning Locate near service entrance to garage and dining room Carefully plan location of work centers Food preparation center Cleanup center Cooking center Create an efficient work triangle

9 Kitchen Accessibility
Work surfaces should be lower Sinks should have clearance underneath Cooking units should be accessible Toe space: 6" deep, 9" high Knee space: 30" wide, 27" high, and 25"

10 Kitchen Styles Six basic styles: Straight-line kitchen
L-shaped kitchen Corridor kitchen Island kitchen U-shaped kitchen Peninsula kitchen

All work centers are located on a single wall

12 L-Shaped Kitchen Work centers located on two adjacent walls

13 Corridor Kitchen Work centers located on two walls opposite each other

14 U-Shaped Kitchen Work centers located on three adjoining walls, in a U shape

15 Peninsula Kitchen Base cabinets and counter areas extend into room from one of the walls Can divide kitchen area from dining or family room

16 Island Kitchen Modification of straight-line, L-shaped, or U-shaped kitchen that includes a freestanding island

17 Green Architecture Green kitchens Kitchens are active recycling areas
Familiarize yourself with recycling rules in communities where you design homes Design kitchen to make recycling easy Work with clients to determine their needs

18 Cabinets Provide the majority of storage space
Standard base cabinets are 34-1/2" high and 24" deep and are available in 3" increments Wall cabinets are 12" to 13" inches deep and 12" to 30" high

19 Cabinet Accessibility
Use compartmentalized drawers and roll-out shelves, racks, and baskets Position wall cabinets so first shelf is reachable from seated position Mechanical assistance needed for cabinets over stoves or refrigerators Use adjustable shelves in wall cabinets

22 Appliances Include stove/range, oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, garbage disposal Appliances shown on floor plan are not movable Movable appliances may be shown on presentation drawings

23 Ventilation and Lighting
Ventilation required in kitchen Range hood vented through outside wall or roof Windows used in some climates Kitchen lighting includes main ceiling fixture plus task lighting

24 Laundry Room and Mudroom
Laundry room used for washing, drying, pressing, and folding clothes Laundry room cabinets used for storage Handicapped accessible room allows space to use washer, dryer, cabinets Door must be at least 2'-8" Mudroom connected to service entrance Place to remove coats, boots, outdoor gear

25 Garage or Carport Shelter for homeowner’s cars
Attached to house or freestanding Carport open on one or more sides, providing less protection and security Garage more desirable in very hot or cold climates Carports are less expensive to build than garages

26 Garage or Carport Size and Location
Based on number of cars, size and layout of house, available space Single-car from 11' x 19' to 16' x 25' Two car from 20' x 20' to 25' x 25' Handicapped accessible at least 24' long and 12' x 14-1/2' wide

Should integrate with rest of structure Detached garages should have a walkway to service entrance of house Plan for storage 4” thick concrete floor, with good drainage Windows for ventilation and lighting Attached garages must meet fire protection codes

28 Garage Doors Also known as overhead doors
Available in wood, fiberglass, plastic, vinyl, aluminum, and steel Single-car door: 8' or 9' wide, 7' or 8' high Two-car door: 16' or 18' wide, 7' or 8' high Higher doors are made for recreational vehicles

29 Driveway Minimum driveway width is 10' for single-car garage
Driveway turnaround recommended if space is available Allows driver to drive forward onto street instead of backing out

31 Employability Honesty and ethics in the workplace
Employer expects you to be honest and act with integrity Arriving late for work, leaving early from work, taking office supplies for personal use are all forms of dishonesty Guard against all forms of dishonesty Consider how you would react if you witness a fellow employee being dishonest
