How is Madame Schachter like Moishe the Beadle? Upon arriving at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the deportees experienced an initial selection. How do the Germans orchestrate their arrival? Describe the process. Why is this moment significant to Elie? During the initial selection, some of the younger prisoners tried to promote a revolt. Why do you think this “wind of revolt” disappeared? Rather than die at the hands of the Germans, Elie ponders taking his own life. How does Elie intend to kill himself? What is the significance of the Jews reciting the Kaddish while walking past the crematorium? Wiesel’s passage on page 34 which begins “Never shall I forget…” is considered one of the most powerful in his memoir. Why is this passage so powerful? What is Elie trying to tell us?
