3 Who remembers what a HOOK is?
The focus of today’s lesson is to write a good LEAD or HOOK for your Explanatory Essay. Who remembers what a HOOK is? A hook is an OPENING SENTENCE that GRABS your reader’s attention. The very beginning of all essays should have a hook. Today we will practice 3 different strategies to create a lead.

4 STRATEGY #1 Ask a Question
Have you ever walked past a display of graffiti on the street?

5 STRATEGY #2 Interesting Fact About 12,000 abandoned buildings are used for street art in Detroit, Michigan (NewsELA).

6 STRATEGY #3 Set the Scene Picture a city without any art in it. No museums, no theaters, none whatsoever. Is that a place in which you would like to live?

7 Pick one of your THREE HOOKS and write it on the next page, under Lesson 10: “Introduction Paragraph.”

8 SUBTOPICS: History, Types of Street Art, Purposes
TOPIC: Street Art SUBTOPICS: History, Types of Street Art, Purposes Your introduction paragraph must include 1) The LEAD, 2) the TOPIC, and 3) the three SUBTOPICS which break down the topic.

9 TURN AND TALK “ Picture a city without any art in it. No museums, no theaters, nothing whatsoever. Is that a place in which you would like to live? Many people do not recognize, and in fact, underappreciate street art in today’s society. Like any part of human culture, street art goes back historically speaking, includes different types, and serves multiple purposes. Street art is more than just a display one walks past on the way to their destination. " Find the LEAD Find the TOPIC SENTENCE Find the SUBTOPICS SENTENCE Is this a good introductory paragraph? Why or why not?

10 Now… YOU TRY writing a TOPIC SENTENCE
“ Picture a city without any art in it. "

11 Now… YOU TRY writing a SUBTOPICS SENTENCE
“ Picture a city without any art in it. "

12 Now… WRAP UP YOUR PARAGRAPH
“ Picture a city without any art in it. "
