Water-Soluble Hormone
Blood capillary Water-soluble hormone 1 Binding of hormone (first messenger) to its receptor activates G protein, which activates adenylate cyclase Receptor Adenylate cyclase Second messenger G protein 2 Activated adenylate cyclase converts ATP to cAMP ATP cAMP Protein kinases 6 Phosphodiesterase inactivates cAMP 3 cAMP serves as a second messenger to activate protein kinases Activated protein kinases 4 Activated protein kinases phosphorylate cellular proteins Protein ATP ADP Protein - P Millions of phosphorylated proteins cause reactions that produce physiological responses 5 Target cell

Water Soluble Hormone Activation of G-protein coupled receptor. (I) Resting state. (II) Hormone binding produces a conformational change in the receptor that causes (III) the subunit to exchange GDP for GTP, dissociate from the /-subunit and interact with its effector molecule. The /-subunit also interacts with its effector molecule. (IV) The subunit converts GTP to GDP, which allows it to reassociate with the /-subunit, and the hormone dissociates from the receptor, restoring the resting state. (I).
