1 Equipment Metre rulers x6 White Tack Graph Paper
Height table printable x1 per student (if needed)

2 Variation 2 Continuous and categoric variation
Describe variation as Continuous or Categoric Word Builder Starter: Students make as many words as possible (4 letters+) not including continuous, categoric or variation. Each letter can be used once (unless there are multiples in the phrase) Give vivos for the longest word, Most ‘scientific’ (your choice, pick ones which relate to the topic), and optionally most words over 4 letters Continuous and categoric variation

3 Types of data The two types of variation are Continuous and Discontinuous… What do you think they mean? Extend Can you think of examples that might go into each category? Think Pair Share

4 Continuous Data This data is called continuous because the scale of measurement e.g. we can travel a distance of and 1.85 and even miles.

5 Discontinuous/Discrete Data
This is called discrete data because the units of measurement (for example, CDs) cannot be split up.

6 Types of data Where do you think these belong? Shoe size, height, weight, eye colour, sex Categoric – Shoe Size, Eye colour, Sex Continuous – Height, Weight

7 Discontinuous Look at the students around the class and create a tally chart for their eye colour. Plot a bar chart of the results on graph paper Eye Colour Tally Blue Brown Hazel As it says on the tin, Students get a copy of the table and use it to make a tally. Talk through the components of a good graph Plot a bar graph using the tally.

8 Continuous Using the rulers provided around the room to measure heights of everybody (Share your measurements once you have them). What sort of graph should be drawn with this data? Height (cm) Frequency Table is a printable if wanted. Stick rulers to walls with whitetack. Stick the rulers 1m above the floor and have students add 100cm to whatever measure they make

9 Plenary In 2 paragraphs explain how you are different to the person sitting next to you. Include in your writing: What the variations are If they are Continuous or Discontinuous If they are Environmental or Genetic
