There will be TWO Questions: Use you knowledge of X to assess how useful Source Y is as evidence of….. 2. Using these three sources in their historical context, assess how far they support the view that….

2 Evaluation and the Enquiries Element
From the board. “Evaluation is the application of own knowledge to a source in order to judge the validity of the view of the source about an issue. The knowledge may either support or challenge the view in the source.”

C – Context O – Origin P – Purpose

5 C – Context Is the date significant ?
You really need to know what was happening when the source was produced. How does this impact on the source’s utility ? How typical is this source ?

6 O – Origin Where was the source made, and by whom ?
Here the religion or politics of the author might be important. Do these inform the opinions being given.

7 P – Purpose What is the source (is this significant) ?
Why was the source produced ? Is there emotive language ?

Both Questions at AS will require candidates to: Interpret the Source Explain the view of the Source about the issue in the Question Consider the provenance of the sources Apply contextual knowledge to the source to judge its validity Analyse the source in relation to the Question Evaluate the Sources

9 Mark Scheme for AS question 1
In order to score well answers must: Focus on the question Evaluate the source using provenance AND own knowledge Reach a supported analysis of its utility in relation to the issue in the question

Two paragraphs and conclusion Paragraph 1 How is the source useful ? Paragraph 2 How is the source not useful - Provence and typicality (own knowledge) Conclusion Extent of use – direct answer to the question.

Group the sources for and against the statement in the question. Annotate each source with an evaluation of its provenance (C-O-P). How typical is the source ? What could we add to support or challenge it?
