Early civilizations began in Mesopotamia as a result of their locations along the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Tigris River Euphrates River

The Tigris and Euphrates Rivers are located in an area known as the Fertile Crescent (in the Middle East).

The first civilization in Mesopotamia was called Sumer.

Sumerian developments included the first wheeled vehicle, improved farming methods, and early forms of algebra and geometry.

Sumerians also invented the earliest known system of writing called cuneiform.

Mesopotamia was home to many later empires, including Babylon and their powerful king, Hammurabi.

Babylon and Hammurabi’s most important development was the Code of Hammurabi, which was the first recording of laws for all to see.
