3 Early civilizations began in Mesopotamia as a result of their locations along the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Tigris River Euphrates River

4 The Tigris and Euphrates Rivers are located in an area known as the Fertile Crescent (in the Middle East).

5 The first civilization in Mesopotamia was called Sumer.

6 Sumerian developments included the first wheeled vehicle, improved farming methods, and early forms of algebra and geometry.

7 Sumerians also invented the earliest known system of writing called cuneiform.

8 Mesopotamia was home to many later empires, including Babylon and their powerful king, Hammurabi.

9 Babylon and Hammurabi’s most important development was the Code of Hammurabi, which was the first recording of laws for all to see.
