1 Cell Differentiation Ch 10.4

2 Differentiation All life starts as one cell – a single fertilized egg.
An organism in its early stage of development is called an embryo. As it grows the embryo changes differentiating cells. Differentiation – a process in which cells become specialized in structure and function Example of differentiation – careers, medications, machine parts, clothes

4 Stem Cells Stem cells are the inner cell mass of a blastocyst.
Stem cells – unspecialized cells that can give rise to one or more types of specialized cells Totipotent – can develop into any type of cell. Pluripotent – can develop into all the body’s cell types, but not the tissues surrounding the embryo. Ex. Embryonic stem cells Multipotent – can develop into many, but not all types of cells. Ex. Bone marrow into different types of blood cells. Adult stem cells exist and produce new skin and blood cells because they are being replaced constantly.

6 Stem Cell Research Research project Research
how scientists are experimenting with and using stem cells today what the possible benefits of stem cell treatments are the ethical issues of using stem cells Write a persuasive letter to Congress as a scientist stating whether or not you think research and use of stem cells should be legalized or not and why. Use evidence from your research to support your position. At least 1 page long and cite your sources on a separate page.
