The British Empire at the beginning of the 20th century
2
Until the mid 20th century, the areas known as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh used to be part of the British Empire (they used to be colonies). After their independence, the conflicts between these countries and poverty led many people to leave their native land and migrate to GB to find new opportunities. In the 50’s and the 60’s, when GB was in need of unskilled workers for its economic growth, thousands of Indians came to Britain to work in British factories and industries. Today, millions of Asians live in GB and their children or grand-children (2nd or 3rd generation) sometimes feel torn* (déchirés/ partagés) between their 2 cultures.
