NHD Video Documentaries Guidelines
Mr. Thein -- NHD 2018 Documentary = A thesis at beginning + primary source images + recorded narrative of story + analysis of primary sources + impact at end! LENGTH: 10 minutes from title page to credits at the end. SCRIPT: Write a script narrating a topic’s significance in history to tell your story using primary source images as your narration progresses. NARRATION: Narrate (tell) your audio in the third person. If you’re working w/a partner, alternate voices. (Do not act on camera.) IMAGES: Use primary source documents and photos as a visual to enhance your audio narration. The images should fit the script and time period your discussing. Avoid repetition of the same image over and over.

MUSIC: Include music where appropriate to enhance the narration. In some place music may not be necessary. EQUIPRMENT: Students operate all equipment, during production and at each level of the competition. EXMPLES: Look at example documentaries to see how they are organized. Check the NHD Website for examples! INTERVIEW: a expert to ask if you can have an interview. Feature clips of your expert supporting your thesis and analyzing the impact of your topic. Make a list of questions beforehand. Cite your expert’s name in the credits.
