2 What? I have to write a research paper on a Human Rights activist?

3 What is research ? Research is when you investigate a topic (subject) that you are interested in Nelson Mandela - apartheid - South Africa

4 What makes the activist interesting?
Why are you writing about this human rights activist? Iqbal Masih - child slavery - Pakistan Benazir Bhutto - women’s rights - Pakistan Ruchama Marton - human rights - Isreal

5 Ask Questions create at least 3 questions about the topic that you would like to know. For example: What was happening in the world? What did they do to change the situation? Did things change? Did they get in trouble? Andrei Sakharov - civil liberties - Soviet Union Elizardo Sanchez - political persecution - Cuba

6 Mukhtaran Bibi - women’s rights - Pakistan Vann Nath - political persecution - Cambodia Now the task is to go on the internet, or go to the library, and, get the answers to these questions. This is research.

7 Research When you find an article that answers some of your questions make sure that you: -- name of the website -- name & date of article -- important information -- useful quotes At least 5 SOURCES are Required! Dietrich Bonhoeffer - victim of political injustice - Germany

8 SEVEN (7) paragraphs for the paper: 1st paragraph = Introduction (Thesis) 2nd = about your activist 3rd = about the problem your activist fought 4th = about the action your activist took 5TH = about the outcome 6th = COUNTERCLAIM – about who disagreed with your activist. 7th = Conclusion Lech Walesa - workers rights - Poland

9 Time to Write! Introduction Claim/Thesis Statement

10 Create your ‘claim’ or thesis
Now that you have information about the person, create your claim: It should be 1 sentence statement that you will prove with your essay. For example: -MLK improved the lives of African-Americans in the United States. - MLK should not be considered a human rights activist. 14th Dalai Lama Human rights Tibet

11 Body Paragraphs You need at least 5 body paragraphs
Shirin Ebadi - women and children’s rights - Iran Body Paragraphs You need at least 5 body paragraphs ALL have information to support your thesis ALL paragraphs should have a topic Use evidence to support your claim (remember to cite where you got the quote) Analyze the evidence Link it back to your thesis (look familiar? TEAL)

12 Paragraph 6: opposing view
Opposing means ‘going against’ a paragraph that tells of someone that disagrees with your activist’s goal A statement like: “Some people disagree….” or “The government opposed ….” Tahir Elci - human rights - Turkey

13 Paragraph 7 Conclusion wraps up a paper.
-- do not introduce any new information -- summarize each body paragraph with one sentence -- link with your thesis statement Asma Jahangir - Human rights - Pakistan

14 No Plagiarism! What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is when you use someone else's words or ideas and pass them off as your own. Even if you put the information into your own words, you still should list the source. Ask yourself, "Would I know this if I hadn't read it on that website or in that book?" If the answer is no, list the source.

15 Find your GLOBAL activist (page 2 in your handbook)
