This session is intended to shead some light on the changes
First, in order to receive the Columbian award, your Council needs only 16 programs instead of 24
Next, the new structure is strongly tied to ‘Building the Domestic Church’

4. Why are we changing Now? The goal is to lead families in service,
not to leave their families for service!
Spirituality
SO, why are we changing something that has worked well for serveral decades?
If you talk to many young potential knights you may hear:
“Well I am spiritual, but not very religious”
The point of this change is to give all Catholic men an opportunity to enrich their spirituality through service to the Church and Community through works of Charity, the first principle of our Order.
We are a Family organization. Our Goal is:

This is what ‘Building the Domestic Church’
is all about!
Pope John Paul called for a more active participation among the lay persons in our Church.
We are part of that laity!!
This is what the “Building the Domestic Church” program is centered on.

Surge with Service

Programs under “Surge with Service” still apply to “Faith in Action” - (About 85%)
The remainder of the new programs require a proactive approach to Catholic spirituality.
Many programs apply to the new “faith in Action” categories in similar ways to the olde patterns
Some can be applied to new categories dependent on your approach

7. How do we determine Programs?
Faith : implies examples of Spirituality
Family: should become a model of the Holy Family
Community: implies helping the needy
Life : implies respect for life in all stages
These are the key factors when deciding what categories to apply your Council programs to.
When several brothers actively engage in a project, The category’s significance might change.
For example, one or two brothers praying the Rosary with a Church group is different than creating a Rosary Hour between Masses lead by brother Knights.

Columbian Award
The categories have changed and how we approach tham to gain the Columbian Award has changed.
The ‘Required’ programs imply a full participation by members of your Council by advertising, promoting, and encouraging all members of your parish to participate.
Featured programs are now worth two(2) instead of the four(4) as before.
To complete the Columbian Award, you must complete a Required program and any combination of three others.
SO, let us discuss how these changes affect your Council
The weight of ‘Featured ‘ programs has been reduced by one half the value under the old ‘Surge with Service’
(instead of being valued for the entire category (4), it is now only valued for one half (2) the category

9. Faith Required: A Spiritual Reflection Program
Examples: Plan a Day of Reflection or a weekend retreat
Holy Hour or Benediction
(Sponsored by Knights)
Faith
The required program must be a “spiritual reflection” program
For example: A day of reflection or retreat open to all members of your parish(es) sponsored by your Council

10. Faith Featured: Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP)
Example: Sponsor one or more Seminarians
Can be cash, computer, vehicle, etc.
Contacts: Fr. Stephen Borello (Joliet) or Ron Ziemba
The ‘Featured’ program is still the RSVP.
The support can be more than a check and birthday card. They can include gifts needed by the future priest(s).

11. Faith Other: Rosaries for First Communicants
Silver Rose program for Baptisms
Examples of other programs can be sacremental gifts of Faith

12. Family Required: Consecration to the Holy Family
Example: Sponsor an event in your parish for all families to consecrate themselves to the ideals of the Holy Family
Family
The required program must relate to a consecration to the Holy Family.
For example a special family Mass advertised, promoted, and open to the entire Church
A good time might be near the Feast of the Holy Family

13. Family Featured: Food for Families Examples: 40 cans for Lent
Parish Food Drive
Family event at local soup kitchen
The Featured program still relates for gathering support for families in need

14. Family Other: Family Prayer night Keep Christ in Christmas
Family of the Month/Year
Other programs also relate to Family oriented events

15. Community Required: Helping Hands
Contact local non-profits on how the Knights & members of your parish can assist them.
Example: Repair of a facility, running a soup kitchen, sponsoring or participating
in a PADS (homeless) event

The required event requires an out reach to your local Community
It should be a Council wide event helping somebody outside of your Parsih

Programs that were once considered Youth or Council categories whould likely apply to ‘Community’

18. Life Required: Novena for Life
Example: Lead your community in the spiritual fight to establish a
culture of life in our nations.
The required program relates to a spiritual involvement in the Culture of Life.
For example, promoting a Novena for Life or becoming active in the 40 days for Life

19. Featured: Marches for Life Special Olympics Ultrasound Project
Featured programs include those previously in the Pro-Life category

20. Life Other: Christian Refugee Relief Silver Rose
Mass for people with Special Needs
Visiting sick or infirmed parishioners
Other programs related to Life

21. Summary Although there are changes, you can see that they are minor.
