2 CONTENT 1. Importance and benefits from field activities 2. Critical thinking skills and cognitive/active learning activities 3. Types and examples of field activities in the military context 4. Difficulties

3 IMPORTANCE AND BENEFITS
- real life environment & experiential learning (experiences first hand) - better engagement & motivation in executing activities (group dynamics and team building) - appealing to different learning styles, increased physical activity The Foreign Language Center “Katarina Zrinska” (FLC), was established within the Croatian Defense Academy “Petar Zrinski” in 1995, and was tasked with organizing and realizing intensive courses for the needs of the Ministry of Defense (MOD) and Croatian Armed Forces (CAF) members. Threelanguages, English, German, and French have been taught in the FLC since its establishment. Although the Center and its Headquarters were founded in Zagreb, it became obvious very soon that this could not satisfy the needs of the CAF. So, in the spring of 1996, the Center started intensive courses in Split, and in the following year in Osijek. Today, the FLC functions as a joint all-service language center for the CAF and MOD members.

4 - student-centred and autonomous (take more control of learning & processing learned material - building meaningful experiences in real life and social aspects through selection of critical thinking skills, active training methods, problem solving, decision making etc. - integrated review of the course material (Campaign-based syllabus)

5 CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
Bloom's taxonomy:cognitive domains emphasizing intellectual and meaningful outcomes - knowledge - comprehension - application - analysis - synthesis - evaluation

6 COGNITIVE & ACTIVE LEARNING ACTIVITIES KNOWLEDGE Work and study on maps, worksheets... Observe... Define and present items, words... Answer when, who, where questions... Remember facts and terms... Identify examples or details...

7 COMPREHENSION Paraphrase what was said or seen
COMPREHENSION Paraphrase what was said or seen... Outline/summerise the storyline, guided tour presentation, map of the base/city... Read information details or reviews... Summerise or report in writing... Present, brief, retell... Describe the most impressive scene...

8 APPLICATION Role play situations. Present the events in new forms
APPLICATION Role play situations... Present the events in new forms... Solve a problem or prove a point... Interview... Discuss... Demonstrate... Present, brief, retell... Produce promotional items... Predict what would happen if...

9 ANALYSIS Compare and contrast
ANALYSIS Compare and contrast... Analyse the causes and effects of some situations... Analyse a situation and determine tasks... Identify conflicts or problems that make up particular situations... Describe interrelationships among people involved in a situation...

10 SYNTHESIS Create a new ending or solution
SYNTHESIS Create a new ending or solution... Make a collage/poster/display... Analyse „what if“ possible situations... Make new versions... Define the conflicts... Video record/provide multimedia...

11 EVALUATION Evaluate the given criteria. Provide feedback for peers (eg
EVALUATION Evaluate the given criteria... Provide feedback for peers (eg. fishbowl)... Conduct self-evaluation... Defend your position...

12 TYPES & EXAMPLES OF FIELD ACTIVITIES 1
TYPES & EXAMPLES OF FIELD ACTIVITIES 1. TERRAIN ANALYSIS (FEATURES & ASSESSMENT) 2. TOUR OF THE BASE/CITY 3. VISITS TO SHIPS, PUBLIC PLACES & BUILDINGS (CIVILIAN & MILITARY CONTEXT)

13 TERRAIN ANALYSIS (COAST, HILLS, FIELDS, CREST etc
TERRAIN ANALYSIS (COAST, HILLS, FIELDS, CREST etc.) - Campaign-based syllabus (Terrain features, Describing places, Map reading, Radio procedures, giving directions, CASEVAC etc.) - observing the area (use of maps), indicating and specifying locations - topographic description, briefing, demonstration

14 - military analysis and assessment – taking into account the constraints of the terrain to perform the missions in order to take tactical choices and to define the role of subordinate units - radio procedures (reporting incidents, casualties, quick reaction and problem solving, prioritizing – call for MEDEVAC eg.)

15 TOUR AROUND THE BASE/CITY - Campaign-based syllabus (People and places on the base, Guided tours, Assault course, Welcoming visitors, Joining instructions etc.) - plans and maps – drawing plans in groups, comparing and contrasting original ones - guided tours – functional skills, interviews with guests, peers, multimedia/visual presentation

16 - welcoming visitors, official visits (demonstrating, briefing, presenting, showing parts, joining instructions, procedures, protocol, RoE) - role play (guests, tourists, official people, hosts...) - writing a summary (report, full description)

17 PUBLIC PLACES/BUILDINGS/MUSEUMS (eg
PUBLIC PLACES/BUILDINGS/MUSEUMS (eg. Maritime museum) - Campaign-based syllabus (Military technology, Specifications, Describing and defining etc) - guided tour, presentation, interviews (general, historical information, background stories about ships, equipment etc.)

18 - multimedia (ships, weaponry, underwater, navigational equipment, uniforms, diving suits, flags etc.) - describing and defining objects (shape, material, purpose, properties, comparing and contrasting historical items to modern ones... - describing, dealing with events (eg. historical events, battles, vessels catastrophes....) - creating display posters

19 DIFFICULTIES - ideal for intensive courses only (time consuming re preparation phase, visit, post-visit executing activities) - designing materials, no ready made materials - giving appropriate feedback (teacher/peer feedback, common errors sheet, recording...) - evaluation and assessment
