2. TAIWAN – A wonderful place to live but suffering from various natural hazards
Severe living challenges:
Taiwan suffers frequent natural disasters, high environmental vulnerability, shortage of natural resources, and heavy pollution loading.
Highest disaster risk in the world:
73% of land area and population in Taiwan face the threat of three or more natural disasters annually.
Frequent extreme climate conditions:
e.g., Typhoon Morakot claimed a national loss > 10% of Taiwan’s annual budget. 2
