1 Pick a science word and write the definition.
Bell work Pick a science word and write the definition. Chapter 7 Open books to Pg. 166

2 Goal: I can describe what makes up the inside of the Earth.
Self-assessment worksheet Pg. 5 RS Write your goal for the lesson on your self assessment worksheet. Complete the before column of your worksheet. Goal: I can describe what makes up the inside of the Earth.

3 Title of Notes: Composition of the Earth
Pg. 6 RS

4 Why is it important to study the Earth?
The Earth is always changing. Understanding Earth processes help us plan for the future.

5 The Earth is not just a ball of solid rock.
Misconception alert! The Earth is not just a ball of solid rock.

6 Layers of the Earth The Earth is made up of four layers:
crust, mantle, outer core, inner core

7 Physical state Crust – solid Mantle – solid / liquid
Outer core – liquid Inner core – solid

8 What makes each layer different?
Scientists classify each layer by composition and physical features.

9 The different layers of the Earth are made up of:
Composition The different layers of the Earth are made up of: Iron Nickel Sulphur Magnesium Different silicates

10 The layers of the Earth have different physical properties:
Temperature Depth Thickness Pressure Density

11 How do we know what the layers are like?
Seismic waves: As they encounter different materials, they change in important ways, becoming longer, shorter, faster, or slower. Geologists study these changes in the waves, and are able to draw conclusions about what the core of the Earth must look like.

12 How do we know what the layers are like?
Geologists also can learn a lot about the core of our planet by looking at Earth’s magnetic field. The Magnetic field is created by massive circulations of hot liquid mantle beneath the Earth’s surface. magnetic field t.hat extends from the Earth's inner core to where it meets the solar wind, a stream of energetic particles emanating from the Sun

13 Think of the Earth as having a gigantic bar magnet buried inside.
In order for the north end of the compass to point toward the North Pole, you have to assume that the buried bar magnet has its south end at the North Pole, as shown in the diagram at the right.

14 How far have scientists gone?
The deepest scientists have dug is approximately seven miles.

15 Pg. 166 – 167 Bullet point one fact that is not already in your notes.
Reading in class! Pg. 166 – 167 Bullet point one fact that is not already in your notes.

16 Quick check! Discuss with your table and see if you can come up with all the physical properties inside the Earth. Hint: There are 5 of them!
