Coach Kuntz United States History

2 Massachusetts Bay Colony
-Puritans were Christians who wanted to simplify church worship by eliminating things like organ music, finely decorated houses of worship, and special clothing for priests. -The Great Migration was when nearly 15,000 people journeyed from England to Massachusetts beginning in 1629. -Represented by John Winthrop, they received a charter in 1629 to form the Massachusetts Bay Company. John Winthrop was elected the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

3 Massachusetts Bay Colony (Cont.)
-In a famous sermon, John Winthrop hoped Massachusetts Bay would be a Christian model for the rest of the world—like “a city upon a hill.” -The colony allowed male, church members to elect representatives to an assembly called the General Court. - STRICT LAWS forbidding dancing, sports, and games were passed by the General Court, and everyone, even nonmembers, had to attend long Sunday church services.

4 Connecticut Colony - A minister from Massachusetts named Thomas Hooker led his congregation to Connecticut . -Hooker wanted to set up a colony with strict limits on government power. Hooker helped create the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut. -The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut set up a government like the one in Massachusetts, except: 1. All men could vote (not just church members) 2. The governors power was limited -Connecticut was a part of Massachusetts, but it became its own colony in 1662

5 Rhode Island Colony -In 1635, the General Court ordered a minister named Roger Williams to leave the Massachusetts Bay colony because of his belief in the separation of church and state and in religious tolerance. -Religious tolerance- The willingness to let others practice their own beliefs. -Roger Williams left Massachusetts and purchased land from Native Americans. He created a settlement that became the colony of Rhode Island -In Rhode Island, people were allowed to freely practice their religion and there was no state church.

6 New Hampshire -In 1680, the King of England separated coastal settlements from Massachusetts and called the new colony New Hampshire. New Hampshire was a Crown Colony. -A Crown Colony is a colony that has its leader (typically a governor) appointed by a King or Queen. -The King appointed John Cutt as governor of New Hampshire in 1680.

7 Fighting with Native Americans
-More and more colonists settled on Native American lands. After watching their land be taken for years, eventually Native Americans began to fight the colonists. -In the 1670s, the Wampanoag chief Metacom (called King Philip by the English) led neighboring tribes against the colonists in a conflict known as King Philip’s War

8 New England Environment & Economy
-The rocky soil was poor for farming and the winters were cold, but Native American’s had taught colonists how to grow some crops like corn, beans, and squash. -New England was full of trees. Settlers cut down trees and floated them to sawmills in Boston, Massachusetts and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. These towns grew into major ship building centers. -New Englanders fished for cod and halibut, but in the 1700’s and 1800’s, whaling became a major industry in New England. -Exporting rum also became an important part of the New England economy.
