Example of Nonviolent Action: Selma to Montgomery March, 1965
A march from Selma, Alabama to the state capital in Montgomery was planned to protest the continued restrictions that Black Americans faced regarding their ability to vote. Involved a tragic confrontation at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, which was caught on camera Succeeded in the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act at the urging of President Johnson, prompted by the events that occurred on “Bloody Sunday”

Rough early life: father killed for activism at age 6, grew up in the foster system, and was involved with crime at a young age Converted to Islam while in prison for larceny Member of the Nation of Islam (NOI), a black Muslim organization Advocated racial separatism, black self-determination, and self-defense* Strong critic of the civil rights movement’s leaders (especially within the nonviolence movement) and white society *A common criticism was that he and NOI incited violence

The end of Malcolm x’s Life
Malcolm X left the Nation of Islam in March 1964, in large part due to disagreements with NOI’s leader Elijah Muhammad Soon after his departure from NOI, he converted to Sunni Islam. He spent much of 1964 traveling the world, including completing the hajj. Prompted a renewed vision toward racial integration, as he had met “blonde- haired, blued-eyed men I could call my brothers.” Continued the message of self-defense He reached out to several leaders of the civil rights movement he’d previously Throughout 1964, he received death threats from members of the Nation of Islam. He was shot and killed in February 1965 by 3 members of NOI.
